Aldi representatives confirmed saying they are “angry and let down” by its French supplier Comigel after tests on their frozen beef lasagne and spaghetti bolognese found they contained anywhere between 30% and 100% horse meat. The chain of supermarkets have since withdrawn its frozen beef lasagne and spaghetti bolognese products as a precaution.
I don’t know about you, but I find this to be absolutely disgusting! Though the FSA has confirmed that they believe that the food is still safe for consumption, it is unacceptable to allow people to purchase products that they believe are made of something that they aren’t. If the label says beef then it should be beef! I mean really what’s next pigeon in the ground turkey!
According to news sources this contamination of meat is a problem that originated overseas in order to reduce costs. Suppliers have been complaining to departmental officials that they have come under pressure from supermarket suppliers to cut corners. Anyone who has these products in their fridge or freezer should return them to retailers as a precaution.
All I have to say to all of this is vegetables are sounding rather good right about now, and that I’m going to go check my fridge, and then start looking up some vegetarian recipes!
