Has it ever occurred to you weather or not men’s and women’s products really have a difference? Well, the truth is all shampoo is the same, all lotion is the same. They all consist of the same primary ingredients (for the most part). These products that are overly commercialized utilize a ploy to market products to specific sexes in an effort to make more money. There really is no gender specific products. Companies just play on stereotypical ideas of femininity and masculinity in order to draw in the different consumers.
Research suggests that products are created to play into the male and female ego, and therefore make you feel more “manly” or “girly”. The major difference in all of the many products that are used daily, is fragrance. Men and women like to smell different and therefore this is how to differentiate the two. Many products play on words and imagery to target to each gender as well. Men are drawn to scientific terminology such as ions and pro, whereas women like holistic and natural terms like botanical.
There are some specialized formulas that do target some differences between men and women physically, but these are highly unique in their make-up and aren’t in your everyday stores. For instance men’s skin is considerably denser and oilier than women’s – and is exposed to a razor on a daily basis. Therefore, a guy-focused formula will usually differ in objective, consistency and technology. This is awesome to know, because if you are a women who has major ingrown hairs, or bumps from shaving, it may be a great idea to check out the mens aisle of the store.
At the end of the day skin is skin, and we all want soft, clean, elastic, acne-free, moisturized bodies. There is no unwritten rule that says you can’t use a “men’s” or “women’s” product. Use what works for you, and what helps maintain your body’s optimum state. Next time you stay over your significant others house, and forget some deodorant, go ahead and share. It won’t hurt!
