At only 25 years old songstress Emeli Sandé has been making lots of headlines overseas in her home country of the
United Kingdom. It’s not only her signature bleach blonde quiff that is getting her noticed, but her powerful lyrics and soulful voice that create a combination that is captivating audiences of all ages. She is so loved in the UK she was asked to perform at not only the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games, but also the closing ceremonies. She is the only
artist that played two sets. Compared to musical greats Nina Simone, Alicia Keys, and Joni Mitchell it was clear that Sandé is making her voice known. Even Simon Cowell, one of the music industry’s harshest critics, says he holds her talent in high regard. That’s quite an impressive compliment.
Even before she crashed onto the consciousness of the public, she has been a force behind the scenes. Collaborating on the writing of songs with many major artists such as Coldplay, Rihanna, and Tinie Tempah, Sandé has been making an
impact in the music we all know and love. Now that her voice is getting as much recognition as her lyrics you can expect to see even more collaborations of both sorts in the future. Already people such as Cher Lloyd, Conor Maynard, and even Susan Boyle are dying to work with Sandé.
Born with the name Adele Emeli Sandé, she decided to go by her middle name because “Adele already had that name covered”. From a young age Sandé was aware that writing and singing music was a deep infused passion of hers. At only
the age of 11, she penned the lyrics to her first song. When she was just a teenager she sent a cd of her songs to BBC Radio 1Xtra (one of the most well known and prestigious radio stations in Britain) and was one of four selected to perform during a homegrown artists session played on the airwaves. It was during this event where she formed a close connection to producer and writer Naughty Boy, who has played a very pivotal role in her professional career many years later.
It was the song “Diamond Rings” by rapper Chipmunk in 2009 where Sandé was featured that began to get her noticed. After signing to major companies EMI Music Publishing and Virgin Records she began to spend hours immersing herself in the production of her debut album, “Our Version of Events”, in 2012. Once released, the album skyrocketed up the charts. It peaked at the number one spot in the UK charts and continued to spend 47+ weeks there. It even became the best selling album of 2012 in the UK, overtaking Adele’s 21. Funny how that works out. Many critics praised her album and the accolades stemming from that praise are beginning to roll in. Sandé received the 2012 Brits Critics Choice Award. In the 2013 nominations she is up for both British Album and British Female of 2013 and is heavily favored to win both. The album has had three No. 1 singles in the UK, including her debut song “Heaven”. It will only earn more.
