Have you ever thought about the affects of the implications of beauty we place on our youth. It can be quite confusing. Why is it that even with children we believe we have to make women all about beauty, fashion, sex, and lack of independence. This is why we have men and women like Kanye and Kim growing up thinking that because they are beautiful, fashionable, and able to sell sex and get hits on instagram that they are some how more relevant and more of an icon than a woman like Michelle Obama.
David Trumble, an award-winning artist, cartoonist and illustrator has taken it upon himself to make a statement about what it means to be a heroine and role model. His decision to do these illustrations was in response to Disney’s sexified, post-film marketing version of Merida, a character from the new Disney/Pixar film “Brave”. Brenda (co-director and writer of “Brave”) explains, “I think it’s atrocious what they have done to Merida. When little girls say they like it because it’s more sparkly, that’s all fine and good but, subconsciously, they are soaking in the sexy ‘come hither’ look and the skinny aspect of the new version. It’s horrible! Merida was created to break that mold.”
David explains, “This was a response to the glossy ‘princessification’ of Pixar’s Merida character, both in image and doll form. I drew this picture because I wanted to analyze how unnecessary it is to collapse a heroine into one specific mold, to give them all the same sparkly fashion, the same tiny figures, and the same homogenized plastic smile. My experience of female role models both in culture and in life has shown me that there is no mold for what makes someone a role model, and the whole point of Merida was that she was a step in the right direction, providing girls with an alternative kind of princess. So I decided to take 10 real-life female role models, from diverse experiences and backgrounds, and filter them through the Disney princess assembly line.”
