It’s been a week since the Oscars and I honestly can’t say that I’m over it. Can you? There were so many highlights; so many moments to discuss! First off, Ellen DeGeneres hosting made the whole show worth watching. No one can say her performance was anything less than spectacular. Well, I’m sure you could but that doesn’t make it true! She even broke twitter after that epic star-studded selfie was taken. If that didn’t seal the deal then, I don’t know what did.
Now onto the nominees and winners. There were a lot of fabulous performances this year in movies: among those being Lupita Nyong’o’s in 12 Years a Slave for which she won Best Supporting Actress. Her speech made me tear up a little bit (maybe a lot but let’s move on). She spoke about her journey to that very stage and her wish to inspire people at home to follow their dreams. I think we can all learn from this- because remember, “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid”. Next we move onto to the winner of Best Director. This was a very special win at The Oscars. Alfonso Cuarón won for his work on Gravity. That makes him the first Mexican man ever to win in this category.
With all the good that came from this Oscar night, there is something serious I need to talk about. I guess this is a controversial topic but I need to bring it up. How did Leonardo DiCaprio NOT win an Oscar? Better yet, how has he NEVER won an Oscar before? I am bitter about this. Can you tell? However, I will say out of all the roles he has played, his character in Wolf of Wall Street isn’t my ideal choice for his first Oscar win. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t totally deserve it.
I think overall, the 2014 Oscars was a success! If only I could have been in the middle of Ellen’s group selfie: cheesing right next to Bradley Cooper and Meryl Streep. Maybe next year.
