Tia Mowry is known for her long standing acting career that began from childhood, her more recent role as a talk show host, and her social media presence that often displays her life as a mom. She isn’t someone you would be quick to assume had body dysmorphic issues.
In her new book, “Whole New You: How Real Food Transforms Your Life, for a Healthier, More Gorgeous You”, Tia Mowry reveals her unhealthy eating routines that she took on while on the set of her famous show Sister, Sister. Being on set was a tempting environment for young Mowry with all of the catered snacks that were at her fingertips. Everything from Twizzlers to potato chips and Starbursts were readily available for her to indulge in. “it was like living in a Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory,” Ms. Mowry said in an interview with PEOPLE Magazine. However, with that access came health issues, even for a teenager.
The pressure to remain skinny while being the star of the TV show and living such a highly visible life was a huge weight on Tia Mowry’s shoulders. It was this pressure that caused the child star to begin taking diet pills to keep her weight down.
Mowry writes in her book that although she didn’t feel fat, “the pressure of being on television and wanting to look sexy and beautiful took over.” Use of the pills continued for Mowry into college where in her Psychology class at Pepperdine, here secret came out. With the encouragement of her professor, Tia Mowry was able to give up diet pills by writing on a piece of paper “give up diet pills”, and later burning it.
With this ceremony, Mowry never again touched a diet pill. Unfortunately, some damage was already done. She was soon diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition where tissue that usually lines the inside of your uterus grows outside of it. In order to reduce the pain from her condition Tia was forced to change her diet drastically, and switch to clean eating which meant giving up dairy as well.
Six months into the lifestyle change Mowry lost weight, had more energy and was better able to deal with her endometriosis. She also became pregnant with her son, Cree. With all of her health issues, her pregnancy was a feat in itself, which only further confirmed that her diet change and renewed mindset was right on time.
